PT Bio Inti Agrindo and BBKSDA Merauke Inaugurate Habituation Enclosure for the Rehabilitation and Recovery of Confiscated Wildlife
04 December 2025
MERAUKE, 4 December 2025 – PT Bio Inti Agrindo, in collaboration with the Merauke Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BBKSDA Merauke), officially inaugurated a Habituation Enclosure as an initial care facility for confiscated protected wildlife. This facility is dedicated to the treatment, rehabilitation, and eventual release of animals back into their natural habitats, as part of a broader commitment to wildlife conservation in Papua.
The inauguration, held at the BBKSDA Merauke Office on 4 December, reaffirms PT Bio Inti Agrindo’s (PT BIA) commitment—alongside key stakeholders—to strengthening efforts to protect Papua’s wildlife from illegal trade and poaching. Constructed by PT BIA, the facility serves as an initial treatment center where confiscated animals receive proper care before entering the rehabilitation phase. This initiative comes in response to the growing circulation of illegally traded wildlife, particularly among parrot species such as the Yellow-crested Cockatoo and the Black-capped Lory—both protected under CITES Appendix II and highly sought after in the market.
The inauguration of the aviary enclosure was also attended by various key stakeholders involved in wildlife conservation efforts in South Papua. Among those present were the Head of Wasur National Park, the Head of the KSDA Region I Division, the Head of the Law Enforcement Section for Region III Merauke, the Head of the South Papua Animal, Fish, and Plant Quarantine Agency, and the Head of Mopah Airport Merauke. The presence of the Head of the Civil Service Police Unit (Satpol PP) and Fire and Rescue Department of South Papua Province further underscored the importance of cross-agency synergy in strengthening the monitoring and handling of protected wildlife.
Merauke’s strategic location with access by land, sea, and air contributes to high mobility and potential wildlife trafficking, underscoring the need for enhanced monitoring across various routes. Confiscated animals handled by authorities are transferred to the habituation enclosure for intensive care, adequate feeding, and regular check-ups by experienced veterinarians. Once declared healthy and ready to the sustainability of Papua’s wildlife.
“Since 2023, we have been working with BBKSDA Papua to implement ecosystem and biodiversity conservation programs in the Bian Lake Wildlife Reserve. We do not view this commitment as a short-term initiative, but rather as a long-term program embedded in our corporate practices,” said Mr. Cho Seung Ryong, a representative of PT BIA management.
“This is a tangible manifestation that conservation is not merely about protecting areas, but also about ensuring the safety and sustainability of every living being within them.” said a representative of BBKSDA Papua.
The inauguration of the aviary and habituation enclosures is expected to mark the beginning of a more structured and sustainable approach to wildlife protection in Papua. These facilities are envisioned not only as centers for the physical recovery of confiscated animals but also as hubs for education,
collaboration, and capacity building among conservation stakeholders. With improved infrastructure, rehabilitation processes can be carried out more effectively, enabling more wildlife to return to freedom in their natural environments.
