Collaborative approach has become the key strategy

The Strategic Approach prioritizes improving the management effectiveness of the Bian Wildlife Reserve (SM Danau Bian) through a comprehensive co-management model that integrates forest monitoring, community participation, and institutional strengthening. Guided by the Theory of Change, the program aims to reduce threats and conserve terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems by enhancing the internal capacity of BBKSDA Wilayah 1 Merauke, empowering community forest guardians (MMP), and establishing long-term management plans aligned with zoning regulations. The Management Effectiveness Tracking Tool (METT) serves as the foundation for identifying gaps, setting priorities, and measuring progress toward the national target of achieving a score above 70%. Early socialization and participatory reviews of METT ensure that the perspectives of government, communities, civil society, and the private sector are embedded in conservation planning.

To operationalize this strategy, the program strengthens law enforcement related to wildlife trade, deploys SMART-based patrols to establish threat baselines, restores degraded terrestrial and aquatic habitats, and addresses invasive species that disrupt ecological balance. Restoration is implemented through community nurseries and planting programs, while technical training and equipment support enable BBKSDA and MMP to conduct effective patrols, respond to illegal activities, and monitor biodiversity trends. Through this integrated and collaborative approach, the project enhances governance, reduces illegal and unsustainable practices, improves habitat conditions, and builds a resilient, community-supported conservation system for SM Danau Bian.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

To enhance the effectiveness of LWBR management and protection through strengthened institutional capacity, adaptive management based on METT, ecosystem restoration, community-based forest protection, and sustainable law enforcement, ensuring long-term biodiversity conservation and landscape sustainability.

Our community members are equipped through various training programs to serve as the front line in protecting the Danau Bian Wildlife Sanctuary. The community was well-prepared to serve as the frontline in safeguarding the ecological balance of the Bian Wildlife Reserve. These trainings function as emergency response measures and include the following components:

Fire Management Training Programs

  • Basic Fire Management Training
  • Fire Surveillance & Early Warning Training
  • Early Fire Suppression Training
  • Firefighting Equipment Handling Training
  • El Niño and Extreme Drought Preparedness Training
  • Fire Risk Assessment Training
