Through ethical employment practices, we seek to contribute to the welfare of our workers and the local communities in Merauke.

Guided by the commitment to protecting human rights in accordance with our NDPE Policy, PT BIA employs ethical employment practices. These include protecting worker rights, fair recruitment, preventing child labor, providing a safe and secure working environment, and actively encouraging the development of an ethnically and culturally diverse workforce.

In our engagements with the local communities, especially the indigenous people, across our concession, we uphold their rights to Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC). This is implemented in adherence to the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).

In Merauke alone, we have provided more than 3,000 jobs and economic opportunities for around 500 of our associated smallholders.

As part of its commitment to sustainable business practices, PT Bio Inti Agrindo (BIA) conducted an independent Human Rights Impact Assessment (HRIA) in May 2025, with LRQA engaged as the assessor. This assessment focused on PT BIA’s palm oil supply chain in Merauke, South Papua.
The main objectives of this HRIA were to:

  1. Identify actual and potential human rights impacts arising from the company’s supply chain activities;
  2. Identify affected or potentially affected groups of rightsholders; and
  3. Assess the saliency of these impacts.

LRQA has grouped its findings under 10 core human rights themes which align with key international human rights defined under the International Bill of Human Rights, ILO Core Conventions, and UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. These 10 themes are:

  1. Child Labor
  2. Discrimination
  3. Forced Labor
  4. Freedom of Association
  5. Decent Work
  6. Health & Safety
  7. Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities Rights
  8. Civil and Political Rights
  9. Violence & Harassment
  10. Access to Remedy

This initiative reflects PT BIA’s proactive approach in respecting human rights across its operations.
