Collaboration safeguards the sustainability of Bian Wildlife Reserve.

The Bian Lake Wildlife Reserve is a riverine and forest ecosystem of high ecological value and rich biodiversity, located within a complex landscape shaped by diverse stakeholders, including transmigrant communities. Together, these stakeholders influence the social and environmental dynamics of the Bian Lake area. Looking ahead, various landscape-level development activities may pose long-term challenges, such as pressure on river water quality, the risk of invasive species introduction, and an increased threat of forest fires.

Future development of the large-scale MIFEE project has the potential to disrupt cultivated areas over the next 25 years and increase threats, particularly to river water quality flowing into Bian Lake, the introduction of invasive alien species, and heightened fire risks. Stakeholder Engagement for Joint Best Management Practices has therefore been designed to identify potential threats at an early stage through regular monitoring, engage with other landscape stakeholders that may be sources of these threats, and formulate effective mitigation policies and best management practices across the landscape to safeguard Bian Lake and its surrounding ecosystem. This strategic approach also calls for the integration of water quality monitoring data into the Bian Lake database, enabling long-term trend analysis to inform and influence improvements in management practices over time.

PROJECT TARGET

  • Joint water quality monitoring, including sediments, pesticides, and invasive alien species.
  • Integration of water quality monitoring data into the database.
  • Facilitation of mitigation actions to improve and maintain water quality.
  • Development of joint policies to support collective protection efforts.
  • Regular stakeholder discussions to share concerns and best management practices.
  • Routine field surveys in relevant areas to identify and track sources of impacts on water quality.
